Five Golden Rules of Cross Stitch

I started my business in 2015 as an extension of my own love of cross stitch, and over time I've come to realise there are five golden rules that every stitcher learns along the way. These rules shape everything I design and create - they're not just guidelines, they're the heart and soul of what Spruce Cross Stitch is all about.

The Spruce 5 Golden Rules of Cross Stitch.

Rule 1: You don't have to finish. I give you full permission to chase the joy. If a new design catches your eye mid-project, go for it. Cross stitch is about the pleasure of stitching, not the pressure of a to-do list. Your WIP pile is not a failure - it's proof you love making things.

Rule 2: Done is better than perfect. That slightly wonky stitch? It's not a mistake, it's personality. Cross stitch is a handmade craft and handmade means human. I celebrate the charm that comes from real hands doing real work - no apologies needed.

Rule 3: It's okay to have a messy back. Here's a little secret: nobody is turning your hoop over. The front is where the magic lives, and that's all that matters. Stitch the way that feels good, not the way that looks impressive from behind.

Rule 4: Your finished piece doesn't need to be displayed. Stitched it? Brilliant. What you do with it next is entirely up to you. Frame it, gift it, swap it, or tuck it away - every outcome is a win. The value was always in the making.

Rule 5: Make it yours. Swap a colour. Tweak a design. Add something unexpected. Your cross stitch is your creative playground and there are no wrong moves. I make the patterns - you make them yours.

Happy Stitching :)
